A Fresh Start

I’ve always wondered if I could really eat healthier from my own back yard.  I’ve read about it. I’ve heard about it. I’ve seen it on T.V.  The question for me though is, can I do it?  I love to grow things.  I have since the time I was a kid.  I even love the science and chemistry of soil though I’ve never studied it.  It’s facinating.  But the question remains,  can I grow and maintain a vegetable garden this year from which to supply a large portion of my family’s dietary needs.  It can’t hurt to try.  Nothing ventured.  Nothing gained.  Right?!

This past fall I discovered my new favorite vegetable from the backyard.  Kale.  Yes, kale.  I had never tasted kale until this past September 2010.  I also discovered that the broccoli plant looks great in the garden and it tastes a ton better and fresher than the broccoli you buy in the produce section.  These two discoveries have been the catalysts inspiring me to step out and take my back yard to a level of gardening it’s never been to before.

I’m a novice though and I realize I need help in this endeavor.  I don’t claim to know much about all the right things to do in the garden but I’ll learn as I go.  An invitation to counsel and advice is open here at all times.  As I update the progress, trials and triupmphs, I hope another adventurous soul will be inspired to give something like this a try in their back yard and I hope that those willing to share their knowledge and expertise will help me out by passing along their wisdom.

Whatever the result, it just feels like a great time for a fresh start!

Thanks for sending me your website and your first entry. I will try to put you on my Favorites list, and call on you from time to time. I admire your zeal and applaud your goal. I know you’ll do well. Speaking of soils. Back in the old days when I was an ag student at UT, a fascinating area of study was Agronomy, of which there were 2 divisions : soil and crops. One of the most interesting courses I had was “Soils.” It was an introductory. Such terms as leaching, tilth, soil profile, interstices, clay, sand, loam come to memory (not necessarily their meanings, mind you). Do you still gather Starbucks grounds. O yes, I do recall that ph (level of acidity) is very important, a guide to soil nutrients which might be needed.
Forgive my rambling. You and all your helpers will do well.
